Tenuta del Terriccio
Description
Tenuta del Terriccio, also known as Castello del Terriccio, is a prestigious and historic winery located along the Tuscan coast about 16 kilometers north of Bolgheri.
Located in Catellina Marittima in Tuscany, it is a celebrated wine-growing domain with deep historical roots. Originally known as Doglia Castle, the building dating back to the early Middle Ages served as a watchtower and defense against Saracen raids.
In the 13th century it was entrusted to the Gaetani counts by the bishop of Pisa, and in the 18th century it was acquired by the Poniatowski princes of Poland, who started farming in the area. Later, in the 20th century, the Serafini Ferri family took control, expanding cultivation to cereals and setting a European record in maize production.
It is managed today by Gian Annibale Rossi of Medelana, heir to a historic noble family, who has been producing renowned wines since 1993 by selecting the best land for viticulture within the vast 1700-hectare estate, which also includes olive groves and wheat fields, as well as a herd of thoroughbred cattle and horses.
The vineyards are planted with international varieties such as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot, on soils rich in minerals such as iron and copper.
In the historic 19th-century winery, grapes are vinified using methods that aim to preserve and enhance their unique characteristics through separate fermentations and long periods of maturation in tonneaux and barriques.
Tenuta del Terriccio wines, such as Tassinaia and Castello del Terriccio, are celebrated for their elegance and prestige, reflecting the heritage and richness of the Tuscan terroir. These wines have earned international recognition, establishing the estate as a symbol of the region’s winemaking excellence.
