Gravner
Description
The Gravner winery, located in the heart of Collio Goriziano, is one of Italy’s most iconic and revolutionary wineries. Founded on tradition but driven by an innovative vision, Gravner has redefined the concept of wine, embracing ancient practices such as vinification in amphorae and an approach deeply connected to nature.
The estate covers about 18 hectares of vineyards located between Friuli Venezia Giulia and neighboring Slovenia. The hills of Collio, with their soils rich in “ponca” and climate influenced by the Adriatic Sea and the Julian Alps, offer ideal conditions for growing high quality grapes.
This unique terroir allows for wines with extraordinary complexity and strong territorial identity, reflecting the essence of nature and respect for time.
The philosophy of Josko Gravner, the heart and soul of the winery, is rooted in respect for the land and the belief that wine should be the result of a natural process, without artificial intervention.
Since 2001, Gravner has used exclusively terracotta amphorae, imported from Georgia, for fermentation and aging of his wines. This method, which draws on a thousand-year-old tradition, allows the wine to express its purity and tell the story of the land in an authentic way. Every choice, from biodynamic farming to long maceration on the skins, is guided by the idea that wine should be born out of patience and harmony with nature.
Gravner embodies a perfect balance between innovation and tradition. Although the use of amphorae is a return to ancient methods, the result is strikingly modern, with wines that defy convention and captivate by their authenticity.
The farm has eliminated the use of chemicals in the vineyard, adopting biodynamic practices to ensure the health of the soil and vines. In the winery, each step of the process is conducted with a minimalist approach, letting the wine evolve at its own natural pace.
The story of Gravner Estate is one of courage and vision. Josko has defied convention and gone against the grain, turning his winery into a benchmark for those seeking authentic, deep and uncompromising wines.
